The other day, I was scrolling through Etsy, you know, procrastinating instead of grading those history papers, and something totally grabbed my eye. It was this shirt, a simple tee, and the words, slightly off-kilter, declared: “Raccoon Christmas Probably Just Gonna Jingle Teacher Shirt.” I chuckled out loud, mostly at the absurd image it conjured. A raccoon, decked out in maybe a Santa hat, attempting to belt out “Jingle Bells”? The mental picture alone was worth the price of admission, even though I’m not a teacher myself. It just felt so right.

This particular shirt really resonated, maybe because I’ve always found a kind of anarchic charm in raccoons. They’re these clever little bandits, always up to something, those masked eyes perpetually scheming. My own dog, bless her cotton socks, thinks chasing them is the greatest sport known to canine-kind, though she’s never caught one. Seeing that image of a Christmas raccoon, though, it seemed to speak to a certain chaotic joy of the season.



Christmas is, after all, a wonderfully messy affair, isn’t it? Family drama, burnt cookies, tangled lights – all woven together with the underlying thread of love and, hopefully, a sense of humor. The idea of a raccoon, utterly unconcerned with the societal pressures of the holidays, simply jingling its way through the season, felt… freeing. And I could totally imagine my friend Sarah, who teaches first grade, wearing it during the holiday season; she would absolutely love it.





Actually, now that I think about it, Sarah might actually -need- this shirt. She deals with an absolute whirlwind of tiny humans, all hopped up on sugar and anticipation, for weeks leading up to the holidays. A touch of lighthearted absurdity would be a perfect antidote to any classroom chaos. It could be a talking point for her, a way to connect with the kids and maybe even make them laugh.

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect gift for her, one that actually has some meaning. It has to be something that feels personal and also reflects her personality, you know?
